Training with The Chiltern Training Group
The experienced, dedicated and friendly team at CTG will support you in the application process and throughout your training.
Our courses run for 38 weeks, with 1 day learning at the training centre and 4 days in school for practical learning and application.
Trainees are based in a main placement from September and have a second placement in January for 10 weeks for non salaried trainees and 6 weeks for salaried trainees. Placements may differ in length depending on the course you are taking
Assessment is undertaken on an on-going basis through performance during school experience and through academic coursework. School-based training means that you are immediately immersed in a school environment where you are learning from experienced mentors, while using and applying your knowledge and understanding of classroom learning through Teaching Practices. You will participate in a range of training that focuses on developing reflective and critical evaluation of research and practice.
Course Structure and Strands - Primary
Primary Age 5-11 | KS1 & KS2
This course gives you qualified teacher status with a focus on teaching Year 1 to Year 6. You will learn the subject knowledge needed for all these year groups, with teaching practices across the age range and focused centre-based training sessions. You will gain some experience in early years and KS3 as well, so you know what the children learn before and after your qualifying age range.
Primary with SEND
This course trains you in how to teach your age range with in depth of knowledge of Special Educational Needs. Placements are in both mainstream schools and Special Schools. SEND delivery will be in different locations across Luton and Bedfordshire and run as a twilight sessions. Professional Studies and subject delivery will be in the hub location nearest to the candidate’s address.
Primary with Maths
This course trains you in how to teach your age range with an in-depth knowledge of maths. There will be a focus on how to lead maths and become later on in your career an expert in your school. You will teach a set amount of maths each week to develop your maths knowledge and teaching skills. There are 6 extra maths twilight learning sessions through the year.
Primary with PE
This course trains you in how to teach your age range with an in-depth knowledge of PE across multiple sports and PE National Curriculum areas . There will be a focus on how to lead PE and become a specialist teacher in this field whilst still learning all the subject delivery disciplines for Primary Teaching. You will teach a set amount of PE each week to develop your PE knowledge and teaching skills. There are 15 extra PE subject knowledge twilight learning sessions through the year.
Course Structure and Strands - Secondary
Secondary Age 9-16 | KS3 & KS4 | Subject Specific
This course gives you qualified teacher status to teach from Year 7 to Year 11, where you will learn the subject knowledge for your specialist subject and the professional teaching skills for teaching Secondary pupils. You will have some experience provided of KS2 and KS5 so you know what the pupils learn before and after your qualifying age range.
Secondary Age 11-18 | KS3 & KS4 | Business Studies (CTG and BSTP), **(BSTP Hub Only) Psychology, Dance, Drama , Sociology
This course matches the training outlined above, with the age range of pupils from Year 7 to Sixth Form.
Undergraduate Degree | 3 years Education Studies with Qualified Teacher Status
This is a school-based practical degree. The three year undergraduate course leads to Qualified Teacher Status. Students are placed in a host school for two days a week for the whole academic year and in a different school for each of the three years. One and a half days you will attend core training. One and a half days are set aside for self-study and enrichment activities. School-based training means that students are immediately immersed in a school environment where they are learning from experienced mentors, while using and applying their knowledge and understanding of classroom learning through Teaching Practices. Students will participate in a range of training that focuses on developing reflective and critical evaluation of research, policy and practice to ensure their pedagogical knowledge reflects current thinking. We are pioneers in the field of school based undergraduate training. We have a large and supportive partnership of schools that allows us to find the right host school to support each student.
