Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan

A tuition fee loan is available to cover course costs up to £9,250 and is paid directly to your training provider.

You can apply for a tuition fee loan regardless of your household income. If you have an existing student loan you can take out an additional loan to cover your teacher training and you will only start making repayments  when you earn over the threshold (currently  £27,575 a year).

A maintenance loan of up to £12,295 may be available to you to help with your living costs, see https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/new-fulltime-students for further details.  This loan would be paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term .

Additional financial support if you're a parent, have an adult dependent or have a disability

There is extra financial support available which does not have to be paid back if you are a parent, have an adult dependent or a disability. For example, if you have children you could be entitled to 85% of your childcare costs of up to £179.62 a week (1 child) or up to £307.95 a week (2 or more children)

Scholarships

Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on tuition fee-based teacher training courses in England that lead to the award of qualified teacher status (QTS).

Applicants may be eligible for a bursary if they have a 1st, 2.1 or 2.2, or if they hold Master’s or PhD.

We are also offering scholarships of £29,000 in chemistry, computing, maths and physics. Scholarships also come with a package of additional benefits from the appropriate professional body.

Each of the professional bodies that offer scholarships sets the award criteria. Scholarship applicants should apply to the relevant professional body. For details, go to Get into Teaching.

Trainees cannot receive both a scholarship and a bursary.

Parents' Learning Allowance

You may be eligible for help with your learning costs if you’re a full-time student with children. This is called Parents’ Learning Allowance.

How much you get depends on your household income:

  • Depending on your household income, in the 2020 to 2021 academic year you could get between £50 and £1,821 a year.
  • It’s usually paid in 3 instalments direct to your bank account, one at the start of each term.
  • Parents’ Learning Allowance is paid on top of your other student finance and does not have to be paid back.

The allowance:

  • does not have to be paid back
  • is paid on top of your other student finance
  • will not affect your benefits or tax credit

Teacher's Salaries

When you choose to become a teacher, you’ll be joining a profession that offers a competitive starting salary with plenty of opportunity for career progression. This means you’ll not only be making a difference, but you’ll be rewarded for your contributions with excellent opportunities to climb the career ladder and receive pay rises.

Career progression

Teacher training will set you up to succeed from the very beginning. The variety of opportunities available means you’re always learning as a teacher and adding to your range of professional skills. You’ll develop the talents to succeed in your career, and realise many professional and personal ambitions.

As a newly qualified teacher you’ll begin on a salary of at least £25,714 As you rise up the pay ranges, you could earn as much as £115,000 as a headteacher. Schools now have more freedom to develop their own pay policies to attract and retain the teachers that have the greatest impact on their pupils’ learning. So what you’re paid will be linked to performance and not length of service – meaning you can increase your salary faster than ever before.

Additional rewards

In addition to the basic salary you’ll earn, there are other great benefits available including:

  • holidays – you’ll get more days than many people in other professions, though teachers work for 195 days per year in school, and tend to do some work during their holidays
  • a generous pension – when you’re employed as a teacher you’ll automatically be a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme
  • special educational needs (SEN) allowance – if you work as a qualified teacher with pupils with SEN, you could be eligible for an SEN allowance of no less than £2,085 and no more than £4,116 per annum
  • teaching and learning responsibility (TLR) payments – additional money if you take on more responsibilities
